Volkswagen reports record sales in 2008
Despite the dramatic deterioration in its business environment, the Volkswagen Group met its unit sales, sales revenue and earnings targets last year and recorded the best figures in its history. Sales revenue grew by 4.5 percent to €113.8 billion on the back of a 1.3 percent rise in unit sales to 6.3 million vehicles. At €6.3 billion, operating profit was up by 3.0 percent year-on-year. According to research by EurotaxGlass's, the current economic downturn has contributed to a pronounced increase in rates of depreciation for large luxury saloon cars. Comparing one-year-old examples of the segment’s best-selling diesel models in November 2007 with an identical group of the same age in November 2008, EurotaxGlass's uncovered an additional average fall in value of £7,263, equivalent to a further 21 per cent off the trade-in price. ... According to TMZ, UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones was arrested for DUI during the early hours of May 19, after crashing his Bentley into a pole in Binghamton, NY. Jones wasn't seriously hurt in the accident, but he was taken into custody by officers who arrived at the scene. He made bail a few hours later.
