British public against government proposals to reduce the national speed limit
According to a poll from MSN Cars, the British public has voted overwhelmingly against government proposals to reduce the national speed limit from 60 to 50mph on single-carriageway roads. The poll saw 83% of the 40,554 voters rejecting the idea. Scrappage scheme paid by fuel duty bombshell
The AA has welcomed the Chancellor’s plans for a vehicle scrappage scheme whereby the consumer will receive a benefit of £2,000 (£1000 government grant and £1000 from vehicle manufacturers) if they cash in vehicles registered before 31 July 1999, but attacked the unexpected plans to hike fuel duty by 2p per litre in September as a “body blow” and “fuel duty bombshell”. Motorists will be able to apply to renew the photograph on their driving licence at Post Offices across the country after a new deal was agreed between the DVLA and the Post Office Ltd. The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) warns that car dealers are unable to provide PPI at the same time as finance packages sold to their customers, because of new restrictions on the sale of payment protection insurance (PPI).
