Driving a convertible car can cause serious ear damage
(16/10/2009)
Research published in the journal Otolaryngology found that at 50, 60 and 70 miles per hour, the noise to the left and right of a convertible car driver reached between 88 and 90 decibels. This is much higher than the generally agreed 85 dB threshold level at which permanent hearing damage becomes a risk.
The study found that driving a convertible car can cause serious ear damage, potentially causing permanent hearing loss. An drive through the country with the top down is lovely, but at speeds of 70mph it exposes the ears to sound levels nearing 110dB - the same as a pneumatic drill.
