Mercedes-Benz and smart are preparing for the widespread uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK by beginning the installation of recharging points across their dealer networks. So far 20 Elektrobay recharging units, produced in the UK by Brighton-based Elektromotive, have been installed at seven locations as part of a pilot project, and further expansion of the initiative is planned later this year.

The search is on for 20 drivers to take part in phase two of a trial to test the UK’s first ever electric MINIs. Phase one of the trial is currently underway, the first 20 MINI E pioneers took ownership of their electric MINIs in December 2009 and are due to hand them back in June. A prototype electric version of the Mercedes Vito Taxi has been designed and built by a consortium of British technology companies. Part-funded by the UK Government’s Advantage Niche Vehicle Research & Development Programme, the prototype vehicle meets the demanding requirements of the London Carriage Office and can carry up to six people more than 120 kilometres on a single six hour charge.

Following Alistair Darling’s Pre-Budget Report, company car users are now able to pre-order their Citroën C-ZERO safe in the knowledge that, when it is delivered next year, it will be exempt from company car tax.
